💭 Music and Life / Re-learning Fun / Spend Time Outside
Hi friends, please find a selection of what I am currently reading and watching on what it means to be human, and how to do it better. hope that something in this week's edition resonates with you.
Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking. ~ Marcus Aurelius
🎵 Music and Life
This is a video I find myself returning to with some regularity throughout my life. It's a simple message, told with humour. At it's core it's about enjoying life, not always striving for the next thing and the next thing.
It sounds obvious, but life isn't a journey where the goal is to get to the end as quickly as possible, as Alan says in the video, "it's a musical thing and you are supposed to sing or dance".
💃 Ready for the roaring 20s? It’s time to re-learn how to have fun, says happiness professor
Speaking of dancing, I loved this piece from the Guardian. In amongst the pain, loneliness and suffering of the last year it can seem almost a little distasteful to talk about fun, but for Prof Laurie Santos fun is a serious business. Not only can having fun potentially help stave off things like dementia and heart disease, if you are having fun you will probably better at your job and will most likely be enjoying life a whole lot more.
Now, if only we can bring back some of the live music from the roaring 20's as well.
🌳 You Spend 5 Percent of Your Day Outside. Try Making It More
I find it quite striking that we spend 95 percent of our time inside, but when I think about my own life I think that sounds uncomfortably accurate.
However, this weekend I spent several hours picking blueberries in the sun. I felt almost like I was in another dimension when contrasted with my everyday life full of emails and meetings. The rhythmic manual work, the fresh air, and nothing to think about brought a sense of peace that I rarely feel. As the article says, "Go outside more often than you think you want to! You will reap the rewards in increased mood, increased social connection in your relationships."
That's it for this week. If you enjoyed this week's edition, feel free to share it with your network.
Have a wonderful day,
Jamie
