The sky is open
all the way.
Workers upright on the line
like spokes.
I know there is a river somewhere,
lit, fragrant, golden mist, all that,
whose irrepressible birds
can’t believe their luck this morning
and every morning.
I let them riot
in my mind a few minutes more
before the news comes.
~ In the Morning, Before Anything Bad Happens by Molly Brodak
How do you start your day? Perhaps by rolling over to press 'snooze' on your phone, and then spending the next 30 minutes mindlessly scrolling through notifications and social feeds?
At the opposite end of the spectrum, are people who are obsessed with optimising their morning routine. Wake up at 5am. Meditate. Stretch. Journal. Exercise. etc.
I don't think anyone can really do all that. You have kids, you have a job, a commute etc.
Obsessing over the perfect morning routine doesn't seem like a path to happiness.
Maybe starting small, with just a little bit more intentionality.
I bought an actual alarm clock. Now I start the day with a beeping noise that seems to pierce the back of my scull, and my phone sleeps silently on the other side of the room.
Much better.
I can start my day with a cup of tea in bed, and a book, before my brain get's taken over with emails, news and all the other detritus of life.
So how do you start your day?
