Nobody looks back at the end of their life and thinks "I wish I spent more time on Facebook".
Instead they might wish they spent more time with their kids, or that they had started that business they always wanted to start.
On any given day, in any given moment, it is easier to give in to pleasure. It is easier to spend an hour eating pizza or watching Netflix than going over to visit your family or working on that startup idea you have. But these fleeting pleasures don't bring long term satisfaction.
Technology is making it easier than ever to opt for pleasure over satisfaction. Thousands of elite software engineers in Silicon Valley work to make you spend just one more minute on Twitter, just post one more photo on Instagram, just watch one more TikTok video.
If we spend our days consuming shallow content, eating fast food and fast tv, we will lead shallow, unsatisfying lives.
Satisfaction comes from doing something hard. It comes from making some incremental progress in a skill you are learning, or from a job well done or an hour helping your grandmother. These bring long lasting satisfaction, and ultimately make our lives fulfilling.
