German philosopher Eugen Herrigel studied Zen in Japan during the 1920's and is is considered responsible for bringing Zen to Europe. That Herrigel later became a Nazi shows that a lifelong study of philosophy is no guarantee of living a wise life.
Buddhism is often viewed amongst a certain section of Western society as a religion of peace and wisdom. Of course there is wisdom to be found in almost all religions, but Buddhist societies are far from utopian, and certainly capable of great atrocities.
There is wisdom in philosophy, there is wisdom in religion. But neither philosophy nor religion should be followed blindly. We must think for ourselves.
